Alvar Aalto

Alvar Aalto has been one of the people I have been interested in ever since I started to learn about the Finnish design and architecture. It may seem interesting and I was surprised the first time too but you may have seen or even bought his products. Or…their replicas. So you definitely know his products. Now you can know that Alvar Aalto was behind it all. Now, one of the things about Alvar Aalto is that, his products have the exact but machine made version in IKEA. So, he was the first person to ever design the product and do it handmade whereas nowadays, IKEA is doing it machine made for cheaper prices. Although, Alvar Aalto is still selling the handmade products but…they are very expensive which is worth it since there is some real handwork there. If you have the money, go for it!
He usually did designs that involved to curve the wood and bark of the trees. Alongside the amazing furniture, he also did design textile and glassware. Even at the time, the furniture he designed was very futuristic and modern and therefore is among us today. I especially love the chairs and their designs.

He has also done a lot of architecture and my favorite ones are:

1)      Villa Mairea

Villa Mairea (1937-1939) | Moderni arkkitehtuuri,Skandinaavinen ...
You can definitely see the modern side of the building and how it almost blends in with the nature.

2)      Paimio Sanatorium

Alvar Aalto, Fabrice Fouillet · Paimio Sanatorium · Divisare
This building has a uniqueness of being white and being very sharp.

3) The Library of Alvar Aalto
Viipuri Library | World Monuments Fund
Here you can see how well and modern the library looks today.

4)      Baker House
Baker House | MIT List Visual Arts Center
As we can also see here, the building blends in with the nature. It looks very normal.

5)      The Finlandia Hall
Finlandia Hall awarded as world's best event venue
It has an award of being the worlds best venue!

6)      The Aalto Theatre

Again, a building of curves.

As seen from his design, I must say that Alvar Aalto loves to design modern and curvy art. I think that it looks absolutely amazing.
Also, here are some websites if you would like to check out his designs and maybe even buy some!
